This Franciscan Abbey is the only church in the midlands which continues to function as a Catholic church for more than 700 years.
This ancient edifice has had a turbulent history until its present restoration began in 1973.
The Franciscan friars seem to have arrived in the area around 1238 at the invitation of some Norman families. The Abbey, built between 1270 and 1306 by William Delamer, continues to serve its ancient purpose. The friars today serve the spiritual and pastoral needs of the people both locally and beyond the confines of Co. Westmeath.
The Abbey church is treasured as a place of public worship, of quiet prayer, a haven of spiritual renewal in re-building the Church of God according to the call and inspiration of St. Francis of Assisi. The friary and church retain the living memory of faith-filled friars and people down to this day.Classical B&W wedding photos (3), Franciscan Abbey (3), Irish weddings (9), MULTYFARNHAM ABBEY (3).
